The Impact of Power Supply Failures on LED Displays

The LED display power supply is the power core of the entire system. Power supply anomalies can be divided into several categories: complete power failure, abnormal output voltage, excessive ripple, short circuits, and unstable power supply, each leading to different fault phenomena.

Complete Power Failure

1. The entire screen or local modules go black, with no image and no illumination.

2. The ongoing playback is interrupted immediately, without a normal shutdown sequence.

3. It does not directly burn out components, but frequent sudden power outages can damage the control card and driver ICs, increasing the probability of subsequent screen glitches.

Output Voltage Too High (Overvoltage)

This is the most hazardous and can easily cause hardware damage:

1. LED beads burn out in large numbers, resulting in large dark spots and dead pixels.

2. Driver ICs and receiving cards may be damaged, rendering the module directly unusable.

3. In severe cases, fuses and wiring may burn out, posing a fire risk.

Output Voltage Too Low / Insufficient Power Supply

1. The screen brightness dims overall, with some areas flickering between bright and dim.

2. The image may show glitches, garbled characters, color blocks, and rolling stripes.

3. Receiving cards operate abnormally, with signal packet loss, and some modules may fail to start.

4. The issue worsens under high-brightness mode, while it may be barely usable at low brightness.

High Power Supply Ripple / Unstable Supply

1. The screen exhibits water ripples and flickering, especially noticeable when captured by cameras.

2. LED beads flicker visibly to the naked eye, and prolonged exposure accelerates LED luminous decay.

3. Signals may be interfered with, causing sporadic glitches that temporarily recover after a restart.

Short Circuit / Protection Trip

1. Some power supplies enter protection mode, causing corresponding modules to go black.

2. The circuit breaker trips, cutting power to the entire screen.

3. If the protection fails, it can burn power cables, terminals, and surrounding module components.

Uneven Load Across Multiple Power Supplies (Partial Power Supply Failure)

This does not affect the entire screen but rather one or several module areas: local blackouts, local dimming, or local glitching, while the rest of the screen displays normally. This is the most common on-site scenario.

Long-Term Derived Effects

1. Accelerated LED luminous decay, shortening the screen's lifespan. 2. Driver ICs operating repeatedly under abnormal voltage conditions suffer hidden damage, leading to progressive dead pixels over time. 3. The surge caused by sudden power-off and power-on can easily damage the receiving cards.

Simple Troubleshooting Tips

For local anomalies, prioritize checking the output voltage of the corresponding power supply in that position. Do not keep the display running for extended periods under faulty power conditions, as this will expand the scope of damage.
