How to Calculate the Power Consumption of LED Display Screens

2 views admin 2026-09-10

  • The power consumption of an LED display is generally calculated in three scenarios: **theoretical maximum power consumption**, **actual average power consumption**, and **electricity usage (energy consumption)**. The specific calculation methods are as follows:

  • 1. Theoretical Maximum Power Consumption (Peak Power Consumption)

  • The theoretical maximum power consumption refers to the power drawn when the screen is set to maximum brightness and displays a full-white image. This value is mainly used for power supply selection and cable design.
  • (1) Calculation Based on Pixels

  • Formula `Pmax = (Power per LED × Number of LEDs per pixel × Total number of pixels) ÷ Scanning number + Power consumption of driver and control system

  • Parameter descriptions: Power per LED** = Forward voltage (Vf) × Forward current (If)

  • (e.g., Vf = 5V, If = 0.02A → power per LED = 0.1W).

  • Number of LEDs per pixel**: For a full‑color screen, typically 3 (1 red + 1 green + 1 blue); for a monochrome screen, it is 1.

  • Scanning number**: For dynamic scanning (e.g., 1/4 scan, 1/8 scan), divide by the scanning number; for static scanning, the scanning number is 1. Power consumption of driver and control system**: Usually estimated as 15%–25% of the total LED power, or roughly estimated from empirical values (e.g., 5W–20W).

  • (2) Calculation Based on Area

  • Formula: Pmax = Maximum power consumption per unit area (W/m²) × Screen area (m²)`

  • Parameter descriptions: The maximum power consumption per unit area is determined by the pixel pitch, brightness, and LED type. It is usually clearly stated in the manufacturer’s specification sheet (e.g., for a P10 full‑color screen, about 500–1200 W/m²; for a P3 full‑color screen, about 800–1500 W/m²).
  • 2. Actual Average Power Consumption

  • In actual use, the screen rarely displays a full‑white image at maximum brightness, and many LEDs are not constantly lit. Therefore, the actual average power consumption is much lower than the theoretical maximum and is mainly used to estimate daily electricity costs.

  • Formula: `Pavg = Pmax × Average power factor`

  • Parameter description:** The average power factor varies dynamically with the playback content. It is typically taken as **0.4–0.5** (e.g., a higher value for playing colorful videos or full‑white images, and a lower value for static text or dark images).

  • 3. Electricity Usage (Energy Consumption)

  • This is used to calculate the actual electricity cost, combining the average power consumption and the operating time.

  • Formula: `Electricity usage (kWh) = Actual average power consumption (kW) × Operating time (hours)`

  • Parameter description: The actual average power consumption must be converted to kilowatts (kW) for calculation. For example, if the average power consumption is 9.6 kW and the screen operates 10 hours per day, the daily electricity usage is **96 kWh**.

  • 4. Comprehensive Total Power Consumption (Including Auxiliary Equipment)

  • For large LED displays, the power consumption of auxiliary equipment should also be considered to accurately calculate total energy usage and total current.

  • Formula: `Total power consumption = Actual average power consumption of the screen + Power consumption of auxiliary equipment` (Auxiliary equipment may include air conditioners, fans, power amplifiers, etc., estimated according to their actual rated power.)

  • Current calculation: `Total current (A) = Total power consumption (W) ÷ Voltage (V) ÷ Power factor (cosφ)`Note: LED displays are inductive loads, so the power factor (cosφ) is typically taken as 0.8.
